Sequim sits in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains. Storms coming off the Pacific dump their water on the peaks and arrive here wrung out — which leaves this valley dry, bright, and cool at night while the rest of western Washington is under cloud. It is the same weather logic that made Provence famous for lavender: long sun, low water, cold nights. Lavender answers that kind of season by putting its energy into aromatic oil instead of leaf. That is the whole story of what is in these bottles.

How to use it
The ritual
Small things, done properly. This is how we use it on the farm.

Laundry
Five to eight drops on wool dryer balls before the load. Do not put oil straight on fabric in the wash.

Cleaning spray
Fifteen drops into a spray bottle with water and a splash of white vinegar. Shake before every use.

Floors and mopping
Ten drops in a bucket. The room smells cut-grass clean for hours.

Porch
A few drops on a citronella-style candle, or on the cuffs and hatband before dusk.

We grow two very different lavenders, and picking the wrong one is the most common lavender mistake there is. Here is the short version.

Questions
Answered before you have to ask
Yield, not quality. A lavandin plant is far larger and gives dramatically more oil per harvest than an English lavender of the same age, so the same hour of work produces more bottles.
It works, but the camphor makes it bracing rather than soft — some people find it a bit wake-up. For pillows and bedtime we reach for Royal Velvet.
Yes, diluted in a carrier oil first — but understand that Super reads clean and sharp rather than sweet. It is a great morning bath and a divisive evening one.
Scale and distance. Most lavender product is blended from bulk oil bought on a commodity market, filled in the thousands. Ours is distilled from our own rows in a copper still on the property and bottled in runs small enough to hand-label in an afternoon. When a batch is gone it is gone until the next harvest.
