The Olympic rain shadow

Why lavender grown here smells like this

Sequim sits in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains. Storms coming off the Pacific dump their water on the peaks and arrive here wrung out — which leaves this valley dry, bright, and cool at night while the rest of western Washington is under cloud. It is the same weather logic that made Provence famous for lavender: long sun, low water, cold nights. Lavender answers that kind of season by putting its energy into aromatic oil instead of leaf. That is the whole story of what is in these bottles.

Dry, bright daysRoughly a quarter of the rainfall of Seattle, an hour away.
Cold nightsThe temperature swing that lavender rewards with fragrance.
Lean soilLavender sulks in rich ground. It thrives in ours.
Rows since 1997Some of the oldest producing lavender in the valley.
How it smells

The scent profile

Our own tasting notes, written at the bench — not a lab report. Lavender shifts a little every season, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.

What's inside

Every ingredient, and why it is there

A gentle cleanser built on calming botanicals.

Lavender

The part that slows your breathing down.

Chamomile

The part that keeps it soft.

Aloe

So it cleans without that tight, squeaky, stripped feeling.

How to use it

The ritual

Small things, done properly. This is how we use it on the farm.

1

Hot water first

Let the room steam up for a minute before you start — that is what carries the scent.

2

Hands, not a loofah

You will use less and it feels better.

3

Finish cooler

A cool thirty seconds at the end closes everything down.

4

Follow with lotion

On damp skin, not dry. Sweet & Cozy or the massage lotion.

Two lavenders, two jobs

Royal Velvet or Super?

We grow two very different lavenders, and picking the wrong one is the most common lavender mistake there is. Here is the short version.

English lavender

Royal Velvet

Lavandula angustifolia

Sweeter, softer, rounder. The one for skin and for winding down.

  • Pillows and sleep rituals
  • Anything going on skin
  • Aromatherapy and unwinding
  • Baking and culinary use

Low camphor, honey-floral, almost powdery at the finish. It is the lavender people mean when they say lavender smells calming.

French lavandin (a hybrid)

Super

Lavandula × intermedia

Bolder, brighter, more camphorous. The one for cleaning, linens and bug season.

  • Laundry and linen closets
  • Cleaning sprays and surfaces
  • Diffusers and big rooms
  • Keeping mosquitoes off the porch

Higher camphor gives it that spa-clean, almost eucalyptus edge — the smell most people picture as classic lavender. It also yields far more oil per plant, which is why it costs less.

This one is made with lavender grown in our own rows. Where we can name the cultivar on the label we do — where a batch draws on both sides of the farm, we say that rather than guess.

Questions

Answered before you have to ask

It is built around aloe and calming botanicals specifically to avoid that stripped feeling. Follow with a lotion on damp skin and you are set.
No — it is a body wash. Treat it as one.
Scale and distance. Most lavender product is blended from bulk oil bought on a commodity market, filled in the thousands. Ours is distilled from our own rows in a copper still on the property and bottled in runs small enough to hand-label in an afternoon. When a batch is gone it is gone until the next harvest.
A flat $8 anywhere in the US, however big the box. Instead of a free-shipping threshold with fine print, we tuck real gifts into bigger orders — a lavender sachet at $50, $75 and $100, hand lotion at $150, a canvas tote at $200. They stack.
