Sequim sits in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains. Storms coming off the Pacific dump their water on the peaks and arrive here wrung out — which leaves this valley dry, bright, and cool at night while the rest of western Washington is under cloud. It is the same weather logic that made Provence famous for lavender: long sun, low water, cold nights. Lavender answers that kind of season by putting its energy into aromatic oil instead of leaf. That is the whole story of what is in these bottles.

How to use it
The ritual
Small things, done properly. This is how we use it on the farm.

Light all the wicks
Every time. Lighting two of five gives you a crater.

First burn, three hours
Until the pool spreads across the width of the bowl.

Trim before each light
A quarter inch, all of them.

Afterwards
Warm water and soap gets the last of the wax out, and you have a bowl.

We grow two very different lavenders, and picking the wrong one is the most common lavender mistake there is. Here is the short version.

Higher camphor gives it that spa-clean, almost eucalyptus edge — the smell most people picture as classic lavender. It also yields far more oil per plant, which is why it costs less.

Questions
Answered before you have to ask
The oval four-wick is the dinner-table size. The long five-wick is the mantel, sideboard or centre-of-a-long-table size.
No — the wax pool sits well below the rim and soy melts at a low temperature. Keep it on a level surface and light every wick so the pool stays even.
They are set into the surface, not in the wick path. Trim your wicks and light all of them and they simply toast slowly at the edges.
Scale and distance. Most lavender product is blended from bulk oil bought on a commodity market, filled in the thousands. Ours is distilled from our own rows in a copper still on the property and bottled in runs small enough to hand-label in an afternoon. When a batch is gone it is gone until the next harvest.
